A Daily Dose of Digits - Part 2

How Many Days Have We Been in School This Month Activities:
-Count on the calendar and write under the heading - Number of Days in School This Month: _____
-Each student should make a train from unifix cubes, which represent the number, when the teacher says, "SNAP" they break their train apart.  Record the combinations students came up with.  For example: 6 + 7; 10 + 3; 8 + 5.  Record.
- Use unifix cubes to represent the number of days we have been in school this month.  Group the unifix cubes in groups of two. These cubes should stay up and visible for students to reference back.  Ask, "How many sets of two are in 13?"  "Is 13 even or odd."  Discuss that even numbers also has a pair.
- Practice counting by twos.
- Use the different combinations by sliding unifix cubes apart to discuss how this number sentence would be written.  (For example: 4 cubes set apart from the 9 cubes)  Ask, "How could we write this number sentence to represent 13?" (4 + 9 =13).  Do several and ask about the number sentence, which would represent the combination.
- Label the unifix cubes:" This is the 13th day we have been in school this month."
- Make arrays to represent this number. (1 x 13); Although 12 would be (1x12) (2 x 6) (3 x 4), etc...
- How Many Groups?  If we are grouping into groups of 3, groups of 4, groups of 5, groups of 6, etc... Record in a chart.
            - Make Group It Books.

Playing with the Numbers in the Date: (09/04/09):
Show the calendar. Record the date.
-       Today is 09/04/09 and is the 22nd day of school.  Say,
o      Fact Family Triangles. (9 + 4 = 13) Write all the facts to the side.
o      "There are 4 boxes of cookies and 10 cookies in each box.  How many total cookies are there?"
o       "There are 9 boxes of cookies and 10 cookies in each box.  How many total cookies are there?"
o      "There are 22 boxes of cookies and 10 cookies in each box.  How many total cookies are there?"  -- Let's break this apart, how many cookies are in 10 boxes? (100) So if we have 20 boxes there would be? (200) Plus 2 more (20).  You may want to show how we can record our thinking.
