Teaching the "Teen" Numbers are tough

Teaching teenagers can be a tough job, although this week's blog is about teaching another set of teens, the numbers between ten and twenty.
According the wikipedia our numeral system is designed to:
  • Represent a useful set of numbers (e.g. all whole numbersintegers, or rational numbers)
  • Give every number represented a unique representation (or at least a standard representation)
  • Reflect the algebraic and arithmetic structure of the numbers.
So who was the wise guy who decided to call "11" eleven, "12", twelve instead of "ten one and ten two"?  After all, "21" is said twenty-one and "31" is thirty one.  Our number system follows a basic pattern except in the teens.  Regardless of the ridiculous names, we still have the responsibility to teach these teen numbers to our students.  As I am preparing to go into the classroom to work on the tricky teen numbers, I came across this website that I think is just awesome.  This website lists activities to develop number sense, games to engage students in the elementary math concept, and quick assessment ideas.  Enjoy the website and Iet me know if you have found others.
